Establish a practice that includes lifelong learning, incorporation of professional standards, and mentorship with patients, families, and health care professionals.

Outcome 5:

At Auburn University's College of Nursing PCNP program, I have gained a better understanding of the importance of lifelong learning, incorporation of professional standards, and mentorship with patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Professional organizations create core concepts, domains, and competencies that illustrate the uniqueness of the nursing profession, reflecting the diversity of practice settings yet sharing a common language. Throughout my program, I was responsible for meeting certain professional organizational standards and ensuring I understood the importance of staying up to date on issues that affect healthcare professionals. Additionally, I had the opportunity to interact with several healthcare professionals and the public while completing the required 690 direct clinical hours. During my final semester of the PCNP program, I completed an assignment where I researched several healthcare policy bills in current legislation. After researching several bills, I wrote a letter to a policymaker regarding a current issue that I was interested in and felt would impact my future practice as an NP. I wrote a letter to Alabama Senator Donnie Chesteen regarding Alabama Senate Bill 27. If approved, the bill would ensure prior authorization requests from insurance companies and healthcare professionals, regarding medical services, are promptly responded to within three business days. Although I did not send the letter, I feel this assignment helped me understand the importance of staying up to date on current legislative nursing issues. Formulating the letter helped my confidence regarding this outcome domain. To view the letter, click below:
